Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

INTAN: Jurnal Penelitian Tambang establishes a policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure transparency, accountability, confidentiality, integrity, and human responsibility in manuscript preparation, editorial processes, and peer review.

This policy applies to authors, Editors, and Peer Reviewers of INTAN: Jurnal Penelitian Tambang.

1. Use of AI by Authors

  1. Authors may use AI tools as supporting tools in manuscript preparation, provided that their use is responsible, transparent, and remains under the supervision and responsibility of the authors.

  2. AI tools—including generative AI, large language models (LLMs), chatbots, and similar applications—may not be listed as authors or co-authors, as responsibility and accountability for scholarly work remain with human authors.

  3. The use of AI in manuscript preparation must be disclosed transparently. Where AI has been used, authors must identify the name and/or version of the tool used and describe its purpose.

  4. Every manuscript must include an AI Usage Statement indicating whether or not AI was used in the preparation of the manuscript.

  5. AI must not be used to replace scientific judgment, intellectual contribution, or the authors' responsibility.

  6. AI must not be used to generate, fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or otherwise misrepresent data, research results, field documentation, information, or unverifiable references, or information that is inconsistent with the actual mining research activities conducted.

  7. Authors must review and verify all AI-generated outputs before incorporating them into the manuscript, including the accuracy of technical data, geological and mining facts, references, interpretations, language, and other information.

  8. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, validity, integrity, references, and ethical compliance of the entire manuscript, including any sections prepared or revised with the assistance of AI.

  9. Authors must maintain confidentiality and protect data. Unpublished field data, confidential company or mining permit (IUP) information, personal data, or other protected materials must not be entered into AI systems where such use may compromise privacy, confidentiality, copyright, intellectual property rights, or applicable ethical requirements.

2. Use of AI by Editors

  1. Editors are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of manuscripts, data, identities, correspondence, peer-review reports, and all other information obtained during the editorial process.

  2. AI must not be used to replace scientific judgment, substantive assessment, or editorial decision-making regarding a manuscript.

  3. Decisions regarding the acceptance, revision, or rejection of manuscripts must be made by humans based on the academic quality of the manuscript, the results of the peer-review process, its relevance to the journal's focus and scope in the field of mining engineering, the integrity of the manuscript, and the editorial policies of INTAN.

  4. If Editors use AI for supporting functions that do not replace scientific judgment or editorial decision-making, such use must be responsible and transparently disclosed in accordance with the role and purpose of the AI use.

  5. The use of AI by Editors does not relieve them of their responsibility for confidentiality, the integrity of the editorial process, the accuracy of their work, or the decisions they make.

  6. Editors must not enter or upload all or part of an unpublished manuscript, technical data, tables, maps, figures, supporting documents, correspondence, or other confidential information into AI applications if doing so may disclose or transfer confidential information, personal data, or intellectual property to unauthorized parties.

3. Use of AI by Peer Reviewers

Peer Reviewers are not permitted to use AI tools during the peer-review process. Peer review must be conducted independently based on the reviewer's expertise, professional competence, and scientific judgment.

The prohibition on the use of AI by Peer Reviewers includes:

  • using AI to analyze, assess, evaluate, interpret, or summarize a manuscript as part of the peer-review process;

  • using AI to draft, revise, or generate review comments, recommendations, reports, or review decisions;

  • entering or uploading all or part of a manuscript into an AI application;

  • entering manuscript text, technical data, tables, maps, figures, documentation, appendices, or supporting materials into an AI application; and

  • transferring part or all of the peer-review responsibility to an AI system.

This prohibition is intended to protect manuscript confidentiality, authors' intellectual property rights, the independence of peer review, and the integrity of the peer-review process. All comments, recommendations, and assessments concerning a manuscript remain the sole responsibility of the Peer Reviewer.

4. AI Usage Statement

Every article published by INTAN: Jurnal Penelitian Tambang must include an AI Usage Statement in a clearly identifiable section of the article. The statement must indicate whether or not AI tools were used in the preparation of the manuscript.

Where AI has been used, the statement must, at a minimum, identify the name and version of the AI tool used and describe its purpose. Authors remain responsible for reviewing and verifying any AI-generated output incorporated into the article.

Example statement when AI was used:

The authors used [name and version of AI tool] for [purpose of use]. All outputs incorporated into this article were reviewed and verified by the authors. The authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the entire article.

Example statement when AI was not used:

The authors declare that no generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this article.

5. Responsibility and Handling of Violations

The use of AI does not relieve authors or Editors of their respective responsibilities for originality, accuracy, confidentiality, integrity, and compliance with publication ethics. Peer Reviewers remain fully responsible for reviews conducted independently without the use of AI.

Violations of this policy may include, but are not limited to:

  • undisclosed use of AI where disclosure is required;

  • listing AI as an author or co-author;

  • using AI to generate or manipulate mining-related data and technical information that cannot be substantiated;

  • using AI to generate unverifiable references;

  • breaching the confidentiality of manuscripts or field data; or

  • the use of AI by Peer Reviewers during the peer-review process.

If a suspected violation is identified, the Editors may request clarification, information, or supporting documentation necessary to determine the nature and severity of the matter. Suspected violations will be handled in accordance with publication ethics and the procedures for addressing academic integrity violations applicable to INTAN: Jurnal Penelitian Tambang.
